The Senior Living Decision: Questions to Ask

Francis LeGasse Jr • January 9, 2023

Sometimes with big life decisions, you’re not sure which road to take, but you know you can’t stay on the one you’ve been on. When making the senior living decision, it’s helpful to ask yourself some important questions about whether it’s the right time to choose a more supportive lifestyle for yourself or for a loved one.

Making the senior living decision: Is now the time?

Each person’s journey is different. You might be considering a lifestyle for yourself that includes some personal assistance as well as opportunities for increased socialization, wellness programs, and conveniences. Or, you might be thinking of a parent or loved one who would be more successful if they were in a setting specially designed for their comfort and safety.

Here are a few questions to consider:

Is isolation becoming the norm?

Feeling left out or lonely is very harmful to senior health. Isolation in seniors has been linked to increased risk for a variety of diseases, as well as premature death. As a person ages, it’s often difficult to stay in touch with friends, many of whom may have moved away. Family members often live in other cities.

At Assured Senior Living, our tight-knit, residential assisted living memory care communities make it easy for residents to become a family, with multiple opportunities to engage and interact throughout the day. There is always someone close by for conversation and company.

What about meals and nutrition?

Getting the proper nutrients is vital for senior health. Mealtimes also can be a favorite time to come together with friends or family. But for an older adult, especially one who is living alone, meals can be a source of frustration. From shopping for ingredients to food preparation to dining alone, it can be difficult to maintain a healthy routine. It’s an important consideration in the senior living decision.

The good news is that in a modern senior living community, mealtimes are designed to enjoyable and satisfying. Chef-inspired menus, soothing and comfortable dining environments, and the company of friends return a sense of pleasure to the dining experience.

At Assured Senior Living, delicious, family-style meals are created daily in our well-appointed home kitchens, with residents encouraged to pitch in and feel empowered to actively participate in their daily lives.

Has taking care of the home become too much of a burden?

Many older adults are sure they want to remain in their homes—until it just becomes too difficult. Dealing with repairs, maintaining the lawn and garden, housekeeping and laundry, upkeep of heating and air conditioning, and many more small details are sources of worry day after day.

And then there’s the fear of injuries at home, whether it’s slipping on a sidewalk or navigating stairs. Falls are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries among older adults; the majority of falls happen in the home.

Making the senior living decision provides a wonderful alternative to staying at home in terms of safety and security:  an environment created specifically for senior safety with staff close by to help reduce the likelihood of falls or other incidents. Plus, no more high-risk maintenance duties that involve climbing a ladder or navigating an attic. Instead, you enjoy an opportunity to enhance your quality of life and benefit from programs and services dedicated to healthy aging.

Has the daily routine become too stale?

Not having anything to look forward to each day takes its toll on an older adult. Not only can cognition suffer, but when there’s nothing on the calendar, it’s hard to be motivated to rise on time, eat properly, exercise or interact with anyone. In other words, boring is very bad for you.

Once you’ve made the senior living decision, you’ll quickly see how active and stimulating daily life can be again. Everything from arts and crafts to games and special outings, to concerts, movies, and parties, to just about anything you can think of is waiting for you. It’s one reason so many families are glad they chose Assured Senior Living for their loved one—as a residential model of senior living, our community frees residents to enjoy and be a part of the neighborhood.
